Common Ringlet – Canaan Valley

While bird watching in the northern section of Canaan Valley on Saturday I came across an unknown butterfly along the Middle Valley trail. Smallish with a “Satyr like” spot I took some pictures and tonight doing research discovered it was a Common Ringlet. I knew that this northern butterfly had been introduced in the Spruce Knob lake area many years ago but was not prepared for an encounter here in CV. Other common butterflies were on display with many Morning Cloaks seen. The Meadow Fritillary was a lifer. I’m also including a image shot last June in CV on the Beall Tract, the uncommon Harris’s Checkerspot.

American Lady – Berkeley county

Saw my first American Lady early this afternoon near the Middle Creek sub-division in Berkeley county. The image below is not of the butterfly today but taken in Canaan Valley last year.

West Virginia Whites

I saw several West Virginia Whites (lifer) while doing some birding in Pocahontas county on 5-10. I took some pictures with my iPhone but they really didn’t turn out so good. My regular camera was not at my disposal.

Zebra Swallowtails in good numbers

Pretty much everywhere I’ve been this spring Zebra Swallowtails have been in good supply. They look so fresh this time of year. This image was taken at Shannondale Springs WMA. Spring Azure, Eastern Tailed-Blue, Clouded Sulphur and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails were also present.

Today it is a WMA with a variety of habitats. This late afternoon brought a lifer Juniper Hairstreak.
