Hi all – I’m new to posting images so hopefully this will work! Attached are a couple of poorly focused pics of either a Hickory or Striped Hairstreak taken yesterday on our patio in Morgantown. Looks more like Hickory to me but I’m not familiar with either species so am hoping someone with more expertise can make out enough detail for an ID. Thanks,
Bill Johnson – Morgantown

Bill,
Pictures make it tough to see details. Any chance is is the brown flavor of Banded Hairstreak? From what I can see I can’t eliminate that. Banding doesn’t look wide enough for Striped to me. Doesn’t have that total brown look to me for a Hickory. Edward’s could be a contender. Do you have a cleaner photo?
Hi Matt,
Unfortunately I don’t have a better photo. It flew while I was struggling with autofocus, and we couldn’t relocate it. Anyway overall color was quite brown, that’s what led me to Hickory to begin with. After looking again at photos in Glassberg’s Butterflies Through Binoculars, I agree that the pattern could fit either Edward’s or Banded. I had eliminated them based on overall color but I’m not familiar with these so don’t have a feel for the range of variability. Probably have to call it Satyrium sp. at this point and hope we find it again.
Thanks,
Bill
