SE Arizona
June 7-9, 2013
The wife and I spent a weekend in south east Arizona on a chase
for the rare Buff-collared Nightjar (I did get a recording of it's song) that had been recently found near
the base of Madera Canyon. This bird was one I had failed to find during two previous trips to
the California Gulch area which is located very near the Mexican border
in that same region. The access to the gulch is via a rough, long drive at best from any good
road (4x4 required).
While we were there we also looked for two breeding species; The
Rosy-faced Lovebird (Phoenix) which was recently added as a countable
species in the ABA area, and Mexican Whip-poor-will which was split from
the Eastern Whip-poor-will a couple of years ago. We were successful on
all counts with visuals on all three species. Of course there were
other birds seen(:>. SE Arizonia
area is my favorite local to bird watch in the lower 48!
